Transfer of dialysis liquid from storage tanks
This application note provides an overview of the successful use of polypropylene construction centrifugal pumps for transfer duties in the manufacture of dialysis equipment.
THE INDUSTRY
Dialysis is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when a kidney’s function is impaired. It works on the principles of the diffusion of solutes and ultra-filtration of fluid across a semi-permeable membrane. In the majority of cases dialysis involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned by a dialysis liquid containing purified water, glucose and electrolytes.
THE APPLICATION
As part of the manufacturing process for the largest independent provider of dialysis care in the UK; dialysis liquid is transferred from storage tanks to a bagging line at varying rates to meet production requirements. Previously mechanically sealed centrifugal pumps were used for this application; however these units leaked over time creating a trip hazard and also wasted product. Our client then switched to magnetically coupled seal-less plastic pumps which reduced leakage issues, however the pump manufacturer they opted for were unable to supply pumps that could handle short term dry running. Michael Smith Engineers were contacted to discuss viable alternative options.
THE SOLUTION
Finish Thompson DB-series centrifugal pumps are now used for all of the dialysis liquid transfer duties on site. These seal-less close coupled units have been supplied in polypropylene construction for corrosion resistance, and the carbon graphite bearings allow for short term dry running without any damage to the pump. Finish Thompson DB-series pumps are offered with a five year manufacturer’s guarantee for client peace of mind.
